Celebrating Indomitable Spirit Since 1979

Mountainfilm is more than a film festival. They select approximately 85 films each year from around the world, and they are curated alongside guest presentations, a symposium, parties, scheduled conversations, book signings and musical events to create a full weekend event like no other.

Repeat festival attendees have come to love the events as much as the films. The festival begins on Friday morning with a symposium that's followed by the Gallery Walk on Friday afternoon. Films and presentations begin Friday night and run through Monday afternoon. During the festival weekend, guests can enjoy Coffee Talks, Booze & Banter, the Ice Cream Social, the Reading Frenzy, special programs at The Library, free movies under the stars at Base Camp Theatre and programs comprised of short films, such as Adrenaline and Kidz Kino. The Closing Picnic & Awards Ceremony closes out the annual festival on Monday afternoon.

Background Information

Mountainfilm Festival began in 1979 as an opportunity for climbers and mountaineers to enjoy the Telluride outdoors by day and watch films about the mountains and mountain culture by night. It has evolved over the decades to embrace a much wider and more diverse audience. The programming now stretches to the leading edges of contemporary social, cultural, and environmental issues.

An orientation towards activism has increasingly defined Mountainfilm since the mid-90's, a function of both leadership as well as a growing public appetite to engage with modern challenges.

Mountainfilm bills itself as America's leading independent documentary film festival. Additionally, the program includes a full-day symposium on pressing contemporary environmental issues. This years theme is Migration. Past themes include:

  • Energy (2007)
  • Water (2008)
  • Food (2009)
  • The Extinction Crisis (2010)
  • Activism (2011)
  • Population (2012),
  • Climate Solutions (2013)
