Catch the Fever!

Trout fishing in the Telluride region is as good as it gets. From flowing streams to stunning scenic lakes, every fly fishing spot in the San Juans offers unmatched variety and quality.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • A fishing license is required in Colorado

  • Every lake and river on the Western Slope has different possession limits depending on the species of fish. Refer to the Colorado Fishing Proclamation for details before fishing.

  • Ensure you are fishing on public land.

  • Follow all local restrictions, including catch-and-release parts of the river

  • Handle all fish with wet hands to avoid ruining protective coating with any contaminants

Our Favorite Places to Go:

  • San Miguel River - The San Miguel River starts above Telluride and drains into the Dolores River and provides both technical water and easy access. Common fish found are the rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout.

  • Uncompahgre River - This 75-mile river starts in Lake Como and continues until it meets the Gunnison River in Delta. The tailwater section is in the Ridgway State Park just below the reservoir and is known for having some of the best fish in the state. Common fish include rainbow trout, brown trout and cutthroat trout.

  • Dolores River - The Dolores River offers 241 miles of fishing, with the best locations near Telluride. The stretch from Rico to Dolores, above Rico to Lizard Head and below the McPhee Dam in Dolores are the best stretches, where you can often find brown trout, cutthroat, rainbow and cutbow trout.

  • Gunnison - The Gunnison River is considered one of the finest fisheries in the United States and is prime for fishing in both the winter and summer. In the upper part of the river, fishermen will find brook trout, cutbow, cutthroat trout, mackinaw, rainbow trout, tiger trout and sometimes even kokanee salmon.

  • Lakes - Several lakes in the area are great for fly fishing! Grab your paddleboard and head to Alta Lakes, Priest Lake, Trout Lake or Woods Lake for rainbow and brook trout.
