Adrenaline in the Mountains

Jeeping is one of the best ways to experience Telluride’s high country and the surrounding mountains. As an old mining town, there are plenty of roads that were previously accessed by workers that are now used as a great way to see stunning vistas while getting an adrenaline rush.

A few of our favorite places:

  • Last Dollar Road - Best known for its stunning 360-degree views, Last Dollar Road is a popular easy Jeep trail in the area. The road starts between Ridgway and Telluride and comes to an end at the Telluride Airport, making this great for half-day trips. The road is the easiest in the area, so it’s great for beginners or those looking for great views but without the stress of driving on a tough road. Last Dollar Road is our favorite spot for a sunset over Wilson Peak!
  • Ophir Pass - Ophir pass is an intermediate road that begins in Ophir and ends near Ouray that has tight roads and steep drop-offs. Topping out at 11,789 feet, this pass has a narrow shelf road on the west side of the pass that is best suited for one vehicle at a time. The best time to check out this road is between June and September when the snow has been cleared from the pass.
  • Imogene Pass - Get ready for an adventure! As the second-highest driveable pass in Colorado, Imogene Pass is certainly thrilling. This 4WD road connects Telluride and Ouray on a steep, rocky road that is only passable with high-clearance 4WD cars. The 17.5-mile road reaches heights of 13,114 feet after passing through Tomboy Townsite and other mining debris. Be sure to stop for a pic under the famous arch - it’ll be frame-worthy!
  • Black Bear Pass - This unique drive is only for experienced drivers - but it’s definitely something to write home about. This difficult road begins on Highway 550 at Red Mountain Pass and continues past Ingram Lake and the Black Bear Mine before becoming a one-way road at the “steps” down to the Bridal Veil Power Plant. This is an extremely difficult pass and only high-clearance, 4WD vehicles are recommended.
