Ice, Ice Baby

The San Juans are a destination for ice climbers in North America. With easily accessible waterfalls located throughout the Telluride region, it’s a great spot to try ice climbing for the first time - or to expand your skillset.

Where to Go:

  • Bear Creek Falls - Bear Creek Falls is a popular summer attraction, but can be just as stunning in the winter! Located 2.5 miles from the Town of Telluride, this waterfall has several different routes that are intermediate. Be aware - this is a popular backcountry skiing and snowboarding area and is extremely prone to avalanches.

  • Bridal Veil Falls - There’s nothing like climbing Telluride’s iconic waterfall. Located at the end of town, this 365-foot waterfall is one of the most difficult climbs in the area, but will definitely give you bragging rights.

  • Cornet Creek Falls - Located just a short hike from the Town of Telluride, this unique waterfall is a tube and is only climbable during peak winter months. Cornet Creek Falls is recommended for intermediate to advanced climbers.

  • Ames - Ames is an ice climbing mecca! With several different options ranging from beginner Ames Falls to Ames Falls, Ames Wall and the Ames Ice Hose, a variety of skill levels can climb in this area.

  • Ouray Ice Park - Just a 1.5-hour drive away is the Ouray Ice Park, which is a man-made ice climbing park in a stunning natural gorge. It’s home to more than 100 named ice and mixed climbs, all within a 15-minute walk of the park entrance. It has become such a destination for climbers that there is even an ice climbing festival every winter. Click here for more details about the Ouray Ice Park.
